Pillars of the NFL: Mike Webster

In Patrick McCaskey's Pillars of the NFL: Coaches Who Have Won Three or More Championships he covers the ten greatest NFL coaches of all-time.  Among the pillars is Chuck Noll who coached the Steelers to four Super Bowls and nine AFC Central Division Championships in 23 years as head coach.  In Pillars, we describe some of the key players  for these great coaches and we'd  thought we'd reproduce some of that for our posts.

“Iron Man” Mike Webster

Mike Webster was a muscular hard-nosed offensive center who started in 150 straight games.  He anchored the line for every game in a 10-year stretch and played 15 seasons in Pittsburgh.  Like several of the Steelers’ players from the 1970s, he was the kind of player that the Steelers could count on year after year, enabling the team to focus its acquisition activity on other positions. Webster was one of several hall of fame players on Noll's Steelers.
