Pillars of the NFL: Fred Dean

In Patrick McCaskey's Pillars of the NFL: Coaches Who Have Won Three or More Championships he covers the ten greatest NFL coaches of all-time.  Among the pillars is Bill Walsh who coached the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl victories in the 1980s.  Walsh was innovative and called "Genius" by the sports media.

In Pillars, we describe some of Walsh's key players.  This post examines one of those.

Fred Dean

Hall of Fame defensive end Fred Dean came over from San Diego to the 49ers in a trade in midseason 1981 right before a crucial game with the Dallas Cowboys. Known as a tremendous pass rusher, Dean applied heat to opposing quarterbacks. Dean was know as a former member of the

Chargers’ “Bruise Brothers.”
