Winston Venable Makes the Bears

Former Boise State safety Winston Venable is officially a Chicago Bear as the team heads into its first game of the season September 11th against the Atlanta Falcons. Venable was an undrafted rookie free agent coming into Bears camp.

After making the team, Venable acknowledged that he had much work to do on his game. Several of the Bears rookies have expressed the challenge of learning their position and the schemes during the shortened preseason.

Venable was quoted as saying, “I had to do a little extra work mentally with the playbook, especially playing a new position at safety...I was more of a linebacker in college. So just the terminology kind of threw me off real big during camp. I met with coach Gill [Byrd] on the side and did some extra one-on-one type stuff that slowly progressed learning the defense. It's not like I have it down yet, and I'll continue to have to do those type of things."

Venable comes from an athletic family. His father, Max Venable, played for over 10 years in Major League Baseball and has coached in the Minors. His brother Will plays for the San Diego Padres after playing baseball and basketball for Princeton University.
